Atletico Madrid left Champions League with Pride

What a match it was! Atletico Madrid left Champions League after the 1-0 defeat from Real Madrid, securing its place in their fan’s heart! But it was a proud moment for Atletico Madrid as they fought bravely against such a powerful team and the last minute goal from Javier Hernandez made them lose the game.

Diego Simeone

The match got excruciating. Atletico and Real Madrid were approaching to the end with their utmost power. Hernandez’s score at the 88th minute became the match decider. But Atletico Madrid fought tooth and nail.

Diego Simeone’s boys were decreased to 10 when Arda Turan earned the second yellow card at the 76 minutes. Turan’s last minute blunder cost heavily and Atletico’s Champions League dream smashed for this season.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone’s reaction

Simeone said:

“I leave feeling proud of my team, again we competed superbly in a competition as tough as the Champions League and to be among the eight best teams in Europe is not easy.

I was always taught that in the game you have to compete and if you give your all you will go home feeling content.

I don’t have any negative feelings. There are coaches who would be envious to have these players.”

When he was asked about Arda Turan, he simply answered:

“There is no point in expressing an opinion about Arda’s sending-off because it won’t change the result,”

Javier Hernandez, the only scorer

Hernandez, the hero of the match, was only playing because of the injury crisis of Real Madrid. He missed few chances but got lucky to score the only goal for the team that make the team quarterfinal qualifier for the fourth time in fifth season. That goal proved huge for the team as well as for him.

Wrap up

Atletico had made their mark on the game. The team won the last seven matches in a row. Atletico’s power and talent was proved once again and though the team lost the match and left the competition, they left it keeping their head high and with a lot of promises for the future.
