Chennaiyin FC Performance in ISL 2014

Chennaiyin FC had a great start to the newly founded league as they booked their ticket for the semis before any team. They ended the group stages as the table toppers with impressive 23 points from 14 matches (6 wins, 5draws, 3 losses). Although the points look pale in front of any topflight leagues but here in ISL teams are neck to neck if depth or quality of players are concerned.

They got Kerala Blasters at the semis and were beaten by 3-0 away from home. They kept their hope alive as they fought back to take the clash to extra time in the return leg but Pearson broke their hearts by scoring the winning goal and knocking out the provisional favorites out of the tournament.

They had a very balanced side with good co-ordination between Indian and foreign recruits. They scored some brilliant goals and played as a force to fear of. Stiven Mendoza’s injury certainly minimized their chances of winning the title in the very first year.

Chennaiyin FC Season Preview for Indian Super League 2

Chennai didn’t make it to the final and title due to some injuries and defensive lapses lately. Injuries of Mendoza and Elano halted their good form towards the end as well .When Elano returned in the semis he was not the same one before injury. Milkael Silvestre was key part of Chennaiyin’s defence last season so was dynamic Bernard Mendy.

Mendy’s performance lead to the fight back in the second leg, due to that they almost overturned that.

Indian players like Harmanjot Khabra and Jeje performed consistently and the thinktank kept faith in them. Chennaiyin also signed midfielders like Dhanpal Ganesh,Thoi Singh who can help out Khabra well. Meherajuddin Wadoo is signed as an experienced Indian centre back who can also play the holding role. They acquired champions Apoula Edel and Fikru from Atletico DE Kolkata.

Edel single handedly won the title for the Kolkata side by making some unbelievable saves. Brazilians Eder, Mailson Alves and Italian defender Alessandro Potenza were signed to replace the likes of Nesta and Silvestre.

Notably they are younger than the previous ones, so they rotate the defense very well. Bruno Pelissari, Rafael Agusto can be very ample option to rotate with Elano and Mendoza. So they have improved squad depth both in defense and midfield .Their defense has gotten new dimension with the inclusion of Edel.

Although needed one or two more reliable Indian defenders in the centre half positions they have an overall good squad with good mix of youth and experience. Before the start of the season they had a great pre-season in Perugia, Italy to increase co-ordination within the squad.

In Materazzi’s words

The training facilities, environment and quality of opposition in Perugia will help us immensely in getting ready for the upcoming ISL campaign .

They played four friendly matches against quality sides which will increase their confidence.

Possible Starting Lineup of Chennaiyin FC in ISL 2

If the manager wants to play more foreigner in the outfield he can play Pelissari as attack minded player or Manuele Blasi to pull the strings in the midfield. Indian goalkeeper Karanjjet Singh can take Elel’s place under the bar and still can do well.

Final words

Chennaiyin FC was the best side along with FC Goa to play the most attractive football in the league stage of last season.

Chennaiyin FC couldn’t get to the title due to some costly mistakes in tactics and slight dip inform. This season they will be gunning for the title more depth in squad but they have to save their key players for big matches of the campaign if they are to clinch the title this time around. They can’t lose their tram cards in crunch times and tactics needed to be spot on as there are more than one big tacticians in the hot seats of other title challengers.
