Sometimes only strategy, skill and sheer talent are not enough to win a match, especially football. Oh don’t get angry, as am not the one who says this or rather, believe this.  This theory is something, the footballers themselves fancy. Fortunately or unfortunately as a result, some of the most talented footballers have become the victims of pre-game weird rituals!

Today we will discuss about the pregame weird rituals of the footballers and in some cases their consequences:

#20 Malvin Kamara

Malvin Kamara

This English midfielder has a strange habit of watching ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ and definitely the original version before a match, as he claims it eases his nerves and motivates him!!!

#19 Kolo Toure

Kolo Toure

A weird pregame ritual of Kolo Toure, a Liverpool defender is to be the last person to leave the locker room before match. He once got into trouble due to his a strict ritual. He, during a Champions League game against Roma waited for William Gallas who was in between additional treatment and reached the pitch without the referee’s consent only to get a yellow card.

#18 Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker took his superstition to such an extent where he dropped his last chance to make a world record. he  never shoot a ball towards goal in fear of hitting the back of the net, as he believed that would be ‘wasting’ one of his goals. Only to satisfy his silly belief Lineker concluded his professional career just one goal behind England’s all-time top scorer Bobby Charlton.

#17 Laurent Blanc and Fabian Barthez

Laurent Blanc and Fabian Barthez

A duo in the list!!! Laurent Blanc and Fabian Barthez. The smooth, uncovered head of Fabian Barthez is not only attractive but also lucky for his partner Laurent Blanc!!! They followed the practice of kissing his bald head before each World Cup match in 1998 and they kept on winning. ta-da!!!

#16 Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas

27 years old Spanish midfielder now in Chelsea who kisses his ring gifted by his girlfriend four times before each math. A combination of love, faith and weirdness!!! So cute.

#15 Ashley Cole

ashley cole

Bathing with leather cleats and soften them up for his next match!!! Any explanation? Anyone? Except that it is a weird ritual he follows to win luck for a match.

#14 George Best

George Best

A weird and most unhealthy ritual. Eating a chocolate bar just before a match!!! According to him that gave him energy and positivity.

#13 Lev Yashin

Lev Yashin

The Rusian goalkeeper Lev Yashin did the most unlikely thing as a player just before the game. He proudly announced

“I have a smoke to calm the nerves, then toss back a drink to tone the muscles.”

Speechless!!!

#12 Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas

Casillas has a weird pregame ritual of wearing his socks inside out. And another famous act of him is to touch the crossbar against every score by his team.

#11 Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois

Let this 22 years old Chelsea goalkeeper talk about his own weird ritual as am still in shock!!!

“Before a game, I always enter at the same time in the corridor leading to the ground. I also send an SMS to my girlfriend to say I’m going to change and ask her not to send me messages from this time. I always remove my shoe and my left sock first because I’m left-handed. Then I go to the bathroom, I take a picture of me on the potty and I send it to four friends in Belgium. We wish good luck to each other because they also have games on the weekends. Yes, I sent a photo of the toilets from the Nou Camp to the Bernabeu.”

“I also wet my gloves at the finger tip, and before warming up, I hit my shoes against the right post then against the left post before hitting the fist in the middle of the goal. After that, I’m in a trance and nobody can destabilize me. “

My head is spinning!!!

#10 Bobby Moore

Well, he believed to be ready last in his team or more specifically wear his ‘short’ last will bring him luck. The weird ritual took many minutes of his life to wait in the locker room, while his other team mates were getting ready. If he unknowingly gets dressed before his mates he took off the shorts and wait till his mate finished dressing up.

#9 Midlands Portland Cement

crocodiles

The only team in this list!!! The Midlands Portland Cement were followed the words of their “technical team” a “spirit cleansing” dip in the Zambezi River. Now question may arise what so weird about the ritual? Nothing much except the fact that that river is infested with crocodiles and hippos!!! And the outcome!!! Well a player died and they lost the next game.

#8 Neymar

neymer

Neymar has a sweet ritual to talk to his father just before a match. It helps him to boost his confidence and calms him down. Just hearing the voice of his father makes him strong. Hats off to this boy.

#7 Luiz Suarez

Luis Suárez

Another cute ritual but this time it is Suarez. A man unbeatable in the field is too weak to start a match without kissing the tattoo in his arm that inscripted the names of their son and daughter.

#6 Mesut Ozil

Mesut Özil

He recites the Holy Quran before a match. And his friends know it is too important for him just before the game. So nobody disturbs him in that particular moment as he connects himself with the almighty power to gain the faith that he can win and he will win.

#5 Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo

All the Cristiano Ronaldo fans hold your breath as am going to talk about your hero now. His superstition is unique like his talent I must say. He believes in a fresh hair cut before a big match or league. Weird and stylist!!! Another regular thing for him is to become the very first member of his team to set foot on the pitch.

#4 Javier Hernandez

Javier-Hernandez

He has seen praying before a match on his knees. This has been a well known ritual in his family as his father did the same before an important match.

#3 Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines

How superstitious a footballer can be? This 30 years old Everton defender has a curious habit. He after entering the field unties and reties his shoelaces. And he believes this will bestow him with luck.

#2 Phil Jones

Phil Jones

He is in the same troop who is the last one to reach the field among the playmates and the last one to put on his shirt in locker room. And for different team he has different rituals. Listen what he has to say:

“This sounds really stupid, but it depends on whether we’re home or away,”

“The fixtures list United on the left side when we’re at home and on the right when we’re away. So this weekend, I’ll put my right sock on first, because it will be Swansea v United.

“Next week, if I play against Benfica at Old Trafford, I’ll put my left sock on.

“I also don’t like stepping on white lines on the pitch. When I do cross a white line, then I’ll take the first step with the foot that corresponds to whether we’re home or away.”

The pre-match rituals of Jones are not confined to his dressing-room. He maintains that in other places too like his hotel rooms.

#1 Sergio Goycochea

Sergio Goycochea

Goycochea’s custom I think is strangest among all. The Argentinean goalkeeper believed he could bring good fortunes before every penalty shoot his team faced by ‘urinating on the pitch’. In the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals against Yugoslavia this lucky charm was revealed. But eventually Goycochea lost his faith when West Germany were awarded a penalty and scored only to make Argentina and his faith forfeited.

Wrap up

Wow!!! A list indeed!!! As I was going through the list I could not stop wondering what all is about. To win a match and score goals!

The extent a player can go to for a win is quite visible, and above all their love for football is unique and applaudable. Only they can relate with such weirdness naturally who feel the sentiment attached to the game and how it becomes part of their personalities.
